Racial Injustice, Economic Injustice, Health Injustice

Racial Injustice, Economic Injustice, Health Injustice It’s funny how coincidences work, isn’t it? I ordered the 2nd edition of The B Corp Handbook to see how it was augmented with new case studies of companies that profit, thrive, and grow, all while doing good in the world. I usually force myself to read prologues, forewords, and introductions because, even though I’m anxious to dig right in, I often find there are critical context and additional resources in these sections that can exponentially increase the value that I get from a book, and this edition was no exception. Co-author Ryan Honeyman seemed to anticipate some backlash from B Corp prospects on the diversity and inclusion focus of the new edition, justifying that you can’t really have a company that does good in the world without acknowledging how racial injustices impact economic, social, and environmental injustices; they are directly correlated. In light of the events of the week (#GeorgeFloyd), and unfortunately too many weeks before that (#AhmaudArbery, #CentralParkKaren, just to name a couple), it seems more like a sign than coincidence that this was the focus of the introduction, but it was the way Honeyman seemed to need to justify its inclusion that bothered me. When I was in college, I was told by someone who shall remain nameless, but who was a very influential person in my life, that I should despise affirmative action, because it meant that even if I was qualified for a job, a [person of color] would get it just to make the numbers look better. Why were the numbers so bad, was my response. Their reply â€" including blatant racism, lack of empathy and understanding, and justifications â€" reinforced that, while this person will always be in my life and I cherish them, I cannot possibly adopt their world view, and I became a skeptic of theirs ever since. It wasn’t until years later that I became a recruiter and found myself challenging my own biases while also being exposed to others’, that I became a stronger advocate, and in a position to do so, for equality in the workplace. It was…. messy, though. I’m excited to dig more into this edition of The B Corp Handbook, but today I wanted to share just a few of the wisdom bombs within the introduction because they directly correlate to what is happening right now before our eyes. The other co-author, Dr. Tiffany Jana, is the representative voice of diversity in this book. I think it’s only fair to start with her wisdom: Quotes from Mr. Ryan Honeyman: I invite you to consider Mindfulness Training and Emotional Intelligence (MT/EQ) training for your company and/or team. When applied correctly, over 200 studies prove that MT/EQ helps companies control profit bleeding by contributing to improved problem solving, enhanced motivation, higher performance and productivity, and more while also helping to replace bias/discrimination, corruption, workplace drama, harassment with consciousness and kindness. What are your thoughts on how to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace? Music video directed by Sophie Muller, featuring N’Dea Davenport and filmed at The Chelsea Hotel in NYC. Karen Huller, author of  Laser-sharp Career Focus: Pinpoint your Purpose and Passion in 30 Days  (bit.ly/GetFocusIn30), is founder of Epic Careering, a 13-year-old leadership and career development firm specializing in executive branding and conscious culture, as well as JoMo Rising, LLC, a workflow gamification company that turns work into productive play.   While the bulk of her 20 years of professional experience has been within the recruiting and employment industry, her publications, presentations, and coaching also draw from experience in personal development, performance, broadcasting, marketing, and sales.   Karen was one of the first LinkedIn trainers and is known widely for her ability to identify and develop new trends in hiring and careering. 5 Popular Resume Tips You SHOULDNT Follow - Jobscan Blog

5 Popular Resume Tips You SHOULDNT Follow - Jobscan Blog Posted on April 12, 2018December 16, 2019 by Jon Shields Most resume tip assets are basically comprised of sound judgment and proven techniques, however there are a couple of recommendations out there that could hurt more than they help.Use alert with regards to these 5 resume tips: Resume Tip 1: Hide holes or transient gigs in your resume by expelling precise dates from your experience Some encourage to conceal holes as far as you can tell or fleeting employments by reformatting the dates on your resume. For instance, a January-to-September hole this way: WXYZ Company, September 2017-Present ABCD Company, March 2015-January 2017 Becomes: WXYZ Company, 2017-Present ABCD Company, 2015-2017 The hole mysteriously vanishes. So also, for a solitary present moment position,October 2016-January 2017 becomes 2016-2017. On the other hand, some educate to just rundown the term with respect to business (for example Microsoft 4 years, 2 months) to conceal holes or secure against age segregation. Why it appears to be a smart thought: Recruiters could see a hole in your resume or a fleeting activity as a significant warning. Rather than listening to you, they could select to proceed onward to different up-and-comers. By masking these holes and hindrances with designing deceives, you may trick the enrollment specialist and purchase sufficient opportunity to get them snared on your range of abilities. Why it isnt:One, an enrollment specialist will in the long run get on and dock you for being tricky. Two,the candidate following system(ATS) that parses your resume into an accessible applicant profile could neglect to understand your organizing, making considerably more concerning issues. The well known ATSiCIMS, for instance, defaults year-just dates to January first, so the activity you marked 2017-2017 becomes January 1, 2017-January 1, 2017. The activity you worked between November 2016 and December 2017 yet named as 2016-2017 becomes January 1, 2016-January 1, 2017. This could transform your work history into a riddle the selection representative doesnt have the opportunity to sort out. It could alsocome to haunt you if there are any computerized channels empowered that figure and rate you dependent on experience levels. Surprisingly more terrible, the year-no one but organization could make an ATS neglect to perceive the experience by and large, barring it from search or positioning calculations, particularly if its in the 4 years, 2 months design. What you ought to do instead:Be legitimate. Veiling a hole or occupation bouncing concern could, in principle, help get your foot in the entryway, however spotters and recruiting administrators will reveal reality sooner or later in the employing procedure. They wont be glad to find out about a potential issue after theyve as of now contributed an opportunity to meet you. Rather, utilize ordinary designing and clarify your holes as really as possible in your spread letter.Be arranged to discuss it on the off chance that you make it to a meeting. Expel transient employments from your resume that arent fortifying your application, or name momentary occupations with (Temporary), (Seasonal), (Contract), (Freelance) and so forth. Resume Tip 2: Use a Functional Resume Similarly, the practical resume formatis a well known alternative among vocation changers and individuals with holes in their resume. This position assigns 66% of the page to achievements and transferable abilities before quickly posting the real work history at the base. Practical Resume Template Example. Snap to Enlarge. Download docx. Why it appears to be a decent idea:By committing your resumes prime land to your most appealing abilities and achievements, the scout may give less consideration to your eccentric work history or holes in your resume. Why it isnt: Selection representatives detest the useful resume, a veteran enrollment specialist told Jobscan. Selection representatives arent inept. They realize that youre utilizing a useful resume to attempt to shroud deficiencies on your resume. On the off chance that anything, a practical resume causes more to notice whatever it is youre covering up in light of the fact that the configuration itself is a warning. Enrollment specialists cannot appoint appropriate an incentive to abilities or achievements without setting, so on the off chance that they trouble at all with your useful resume, the principal thing theyre going to do is burrow deeper.Additionally, a useful resume design is exceptionally far-fetched to get along with an ATS. I've seen a lot of individuals that attempt to utilize a useful resume and I let them know, 'You're simply messing yourself up,' finished up the scout. What you ought to do instead:If a customary converse ordered resume group isnt for you, attempt rather the crossover continue design. An ever increasing number of resumes are moving toward this path. You can include a couple of top abilities as well as accomplishments at the highest point of the resume yet at the same time have space to approve them with nitty gritty work understanding. Enrollment specialists and online application frameworks the same are increasingly responsive to this organization. Half and half Resume Template. Snap to Enlarge. Download .docx Resume Tip 3: Beat candidate following frameworks by utilizing a word cloud instrument Utilizing a word cloud to beat ATS calculations is a very well known resume hack nowadays. These frameworks either break down your resume substance and contrast it with whats part of the expected set of responsibilities or parse your resume to make it accessible for spotters. Why it appears to be a decent idea:Running the set of working responsibilities through a word cloud toollike TagCrowd or WordItOut will uncover which words show up most habitually and, in principle, are generally essential to the recruiting organization. Adding these words to your resume should build your odds of enduring the ATS. Why it isnt:The rationale behind this methodology is sound yet word cloud instruments leave a ton to be wanted as a pursuit of employment device. They arent sufficiently canny to perceive what is and isnt a genuine expertise, set up multi-word states, or overlook unhelpful filler words. How to stay productive while working from home

How to stay productive while working from home by Amber Rolfe The coronavirus pandemic has brought on a range of government restrictions and guidelines to help keep people safe. One of them is only going to work if you absolutely have to. As a result, many companies have implemented voluntary or mandatory working from home policies; which means many workers are dealing with an unusual challenge a sudden (and extended) shift from office life to home life.To help you maintain productivity during COVID-19, here are our top tips on how to stay productive while working from home:    Recreate your commuteOK, so we’re not suggesting you literally commute to work and back. That would be counterproductive, not to mention downright dangerous during the current pandemic.  However, your commute does more than get you from A to B. It also mentally prepares you for the day. To make sure you’re getting the same level of preparedness at home, it’s a good idea to carve out an equivalent routine that’ll help ease you into your work day.  Outdoor activity may be a no-go right now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t carry out exercise at home that emulates your walk to work.  Other common commuting activities to incorporate could include listening to music, watching Netflix, reading, taking a free course, or if you’re extra organised, writing a to-do-list for the day. Whatever you used to do on your commute, set aside an hour to do it while you work from home.  The same goes for your would-be journey home.  Going straight from work-based tasks to cooking dinner or doing chores is a big leap and gives you no time to switch off from work and unwind. If you’re not careful, you’ll end up burning your lasagne because you’re still busy wondering whether Tim from Accounts has replied to your email. No one wants that.      Six productive things you can do with your commuteEstablish boundaries  When you’re working from home, it can be all too easy to blur the lines between your work life and your personal lif e.  Before you know it, they’ve blended into one; you’re working on spreadsheets, on a conference call, cleaning the kitchen, and feeding the dog all at the same time. Seems impossible, right? That’s because it is.Routine is an important part of work. And it doesn’t become any less important because you’re working from home. That coffee you make at 10am every day in the office? Do it at home. The lunch you take at 1pm? Put it in your calendar. That task you unconsciously do while chatting to your colleague on a Monday morning? Keep doing it.  Creating a routine will not only allow you to take breaks (and avoid inevitable burnout), it’ll also allow you to uphold the same level of productivity that you had at work. If working from home is a brand new experience for you, this could also be a great way to maintain some normality.        And at the end of the day? You actually go home (metaphorically). As tempting as it can be to lose track of time and keep working over your office hours, doing this in excess could have a negative impact on your mental health, not to mention the quality of your work.  So work set office hours (whatever they may be for you), have regular breaks, and switch off at the end of the day. Your productivity will thank you.    How to: Achieve a work-life balanceFive benefits of work-life balanceEight good habits to start right nowLimit distractions  â€˜I am so ready to have a productive work day just after I watch the rest of this TV show. Oh look, that’s a nice pigeon outside. I wonder if I could have a pet pigeon. I’m hungry. I should clean. Time to bake some cookies. Wait, what was I doing again?’Sound familiar? If you’re easily distracted (or just a human), working from home without getting sucked into everything around you can be a tricky task.    After all, you’re used to home being a haven for free time and relaxation not for work time. The challenge now is to distinguish between the two, and switch off from o ne while you’re doing the other. And the key is just that. Switch. Off.  No matter how good you are at multitasking, you’re not going to get your best work done when you’re trying to focus on Whatsapp, the TV, the news, and the pigeon outside all at once. No one is that good of a multitasker.    When it comes to maximising productivity, the first step is to identify your triggers then do what you can do to minimise them.  For example, if you’re likely to get distracted by a messy living room, make sure you clean before you start work. If your phone is what keeps you from living your best work life, mute it. And if you’re often overcome with the urge to cook, surround yourself with pre-prepared food.  It’s practically flawless.  Top 5 â€" Desktop distractionsHow to work from homeStay on the grid  Working from home can make you feel isolated. It can also take some getting used to.    That’s why it’s absolutely vital to stay connected with your colleagues. Everything f rom one-on-one video calls and group conferences, to phone calls, emails, and IM chatting, will allow you to stay in touch with the people you work with remotely in the most in-person way possible.    And it doesn’t have to just be about work.  Whilst keeping in touch with your manager and colleagues about your tasks, duties, and accomplishments will help you to stay motivated, it’s not the only reason to communicate.  It’s also a good idea to emulate those ‘water cooler’ chats that you’d usually have in the office. Yep, small talk is important. So set up video calls to catch up on your weekends, arrange virtual pizza parties at lunch time, or even organise Friday night beers over video chat. It’s basically like the pub, just with less people and cheaper beer (silver linings).Without these regular interactions that you’d usually get on a daily basis in person, your morale is likely to drop over time with your overall productivity taking a hit too.  Focus on self-car eCOVID-19 is affecting all aspects of the world meaning you’re probably in a constant state of worry about your family, friends, and your job, all on top of whether you’ll ever be able to buy toilet paper again.  It’s normal for what’s going on around you to affect your mood. But this could also have a knock-on effect on your productivity.    That’s why it’s important to avoid getting so wrapped up in the news or stressed about your workload that you forget to take care of yourself. Self-care looks different for everyone, but the most important thing is that you pay attention to the signs, and do what makes you happy.    After all, the drastic switch from office life to working from home life can make you forget about the things you used to do to keep sane and healthy; you know, like eat, sleep, and exercise. And we’re not just talking about frozen pizzas and copious amounts of coffee.  Were talking about lots of water, three solid meals a day, and, most importantly fruit and vegetables. You know the drill.  Additionally, reminding yourself of what’s good in the world, or even just spending some time (outside of work hours) on your hobbies will all help to maintain a positive mindset. There are also a number of wellbeing courses on offer, that are designed to boost your mood.  And if you have an off day? Don’t beat yourself up. Rest, reset, and try again tomorrow.  Six tips to improve your workplace wellbeingSix signs you’re working too hardWork from home jobsStill searching for your perfect position?
